There’s the Ancient Theatre and the Sanctuary of Asklepios, inland near the village of Lygourio. This is the one everyone means. There’s also Palaia Epidavros, a coastal town with its own, much smaller Little Theatre, and Nea Epidavros further up the coast, which has no ancient theatre at all. Mixing the three up wastes half a day. Closing that gap is what this guide is for.

One thing worth knowing before you book anything: Epidaurus is a longer drive than our usual day trips. From Loutraki it’s around 1.5 hours by car, against the “approximately two hours from Athens” the festival’s own venue page quotes for most visitors — a real advantage for guests based here. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Three places share one name, and only one has the famous theatre

The Ancient Theatre and Sanctuary of Asklepios sit a few kilometres inland from Lygourio, and this is what every brochure photo of “Epidaurus” actually shows. Palaia Epidavros, the coastal town built over the ancient city-state itself, has its own, considerably smaller Little Theatre, covered further down. Nea Epidavros shares the name again but has nothing to do with either theatre; it’s known instead for hosting the First National Assembly of the Greek Revolution, held there over the winter of 1821–22.

Wikipedia’s own cross-reference puts the Little Theatre “some 10 km to the south-west” of the main Sanctuary, which sounds like a short hop. Our own routing calculation tells a different story: the road loops rather than running straight, so the actual driving distance is 18.2 km, roughly 24 minutes. Worth knowing if you’re trying to fit both theatres into one day — it’s possible, but not the quick detour the straight-line figure implies.

The Sanctuary of Asklepios — a UNESCO healing centre, not just a theatre

It’s easy to treat the Sanctuary as scenery for the theatre. The theatre was the add-on. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988, and UNESCO’s own description calls it “the earliest organised sanatorium”, crediting it as a founding site of ancient Greek medicine. The property still receives more than 250,000 visitors a year by UNESCO’s own figures, with management described there as “considered successful”, including the handling of crowds during the annual festival.

What’s on the ground is two linked sanctuaries rather than one: an earlier hilltop sanctuary to Apollo Maleatas on Mount Kynortion, and a larger, later sanctuary to Asklepios below, where the healing rituals themselves, incubation sleep known as enkoimesis, took place. The complex once included a 160-room hostel for patients and companions, baths, a gymnasium and a stadium, fed by a hydraulics system bringing water down from the mountain springs. Parts of that system are still visible; a good deal more isn’t. Don’t expect a complete, legible street plan.

Inside the Ancient Theatre — the numbers behind the “perfect” theatre

The theatre was built in two phases: the original lower section in the 4th century BC, with an upper tier added around the middle of the 2nd century BC. Together they give 55 rows of stone benches, 34 lower and 21 upper, divided into 12 wedge-shaped sections, rising at roughly 26 degrees up the slope of Mount Kynortion. The circular orchestra at the bottom is usually given as about 20 metres across, though the festival’s own page and Wikipedia differ slightly on the exact figure.

Maximum capacity is usually quoted as up to around 14,000, though sources vary between roughly 13,000 and 14,000, so treat any single precise number elsewhere with caution. Unusually, Epidaurus wasn’t substantially altered under Roman rule, so what survives is closer to its original Hellenistic form than almost anywhere comparable. Pausanias visited and praised it in the mid-2nd century AD, crediting the design to an architect named Polykleitos, though scholars aren’t certain this is the same Polykleitos as the famous 5th-century-BC sculptor.

The circular orchestra sits at the foot of 55 rows of stone seating, split across two building phases four centuries apart. The standard claim is that you can hear a coin drop, a match strike or paper tear from the very back row. It’s a vivid image, and it doesn’t hold up.

Two pieces of research sit behind the real story, and they aren’t in conflict. A 2007 study in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found a physical mechanism: the theatre’s corrugated limestone seat rows filter out low-frequency noise below roughly 500 Hz, while reflecting higher-frequency performer sound back toward the audience. A decade later, TU Eindhoven researchers took more than 10,000 acoustic measurements across three ancient theatres, including Epidaurus, and found loudly projected speech genuinely intelligible right up to the back row in all three. The quiet-sound superlatives weren’t borne out: a dropped coin or torn paper carried only to about halfway up the auditorium, and a whisper only as far as the front rows.

The Eindhoven team frame their result as correcting travel guides rather than contradicting the earlier physics paper, which is the honest way to present it here too: the seats really do something unusual to sound, and the specific coin-and-match claims are the part that doesn’t survive a measuring instrument.

From sanctuary to ruin to open-air stage — a short history

Gothic invaders damaged the Sanctuary in AD 395, and in AD 426 Emperor Theodosius banned all activity there, ending roughly a thousand years of continuous use. The auditorium survived reasonably well buried under soil, while the exposed stage buildings were looted under later Venetian and Ottoman rule, which is oddly why the seating rows are in such good condition today.

Systematic excavation began in 1881 under archaeologist Panagis Kavvadias, followed by a western-wall campaign in 1907 and a larger 1954–1963 restoration under Anastassios Orlandos, timed deliberately for a revived summer drama festival. From 1988 a dedicated conservation committee has restored hundreds of individual seats and the ancient drainage channel, work still visibly ongoing in parts of the sanctuary. A one-off pre-war staging of Sophocles’ Electra took place in 1938. The Athens Epidaurus Festival itself was founded in 1955, opening on 19 June with Euripides’ Hecuba, and Maria Callas performed there twice early on, in Bellini’s Norma (1960) and Cherubini’s Medea (1961).

The Tholos, the circular building of the Asklepios cult, partly scaffolded while conservation work continues. In its original 4th-century-BC form it wasn’t built for pilgrims visiting the Sanctuary; it was the civic theatre of the small city-state of Epidaurus itself, with 9 wedge-shaped sections and 18 rows of benches, seating roughly 2,000 people, some bearing donor-name inscriptions tied to the cult of Dionysos.

It was lost to view for a long time. Rediscovery came in 1970, with excavation starting in 1972; restoration has gradually increased usable seating since then. The festival’s own page gives today’s usable capacity as 800, well below the roughly 2,000-seat original, since most of the ancient structure isn’t restored. A trial mini-festival in July 1995 first used the restored sections again, and it’s since grown into a smaller, regular strand of the main programme.

The Little Theatre’s usable capacity today is around 800 seats, against a roughly 2,000-seat ancient original. The 2026 season ran from 20 June to 29 August, with nine main productions spanning opera, tragedy and comedy, plus a dance-theatre reimagining of Antigone. That season is over by the time you’re reading this. As of our checking date, the festival has an open call for artists for its 2027 programme but hasn’t announced 2027 dates, so treat any festival night as a bonus to confirm separately.

If a performance night does line up, shows start at 21:00 with audiences asked to arrive an hour early, and under-6s aren’t admitted. Travellers without a car can use the festival’s own coach from Athens on performance days, departing at 17:00, roughly a two-hour journey, with a round-trip ticket priced at €21 for transport only. There’s no equivalent guaranteed return coach for Little Theatre performances. Groups planning a festival evening sometimes find it easier to base several people together; our guide to villa holidays for groups in Greece covers that angle.

Getting to Epidaurus from Loutraki

Our own road-routing calculation puts the drive from central Loutraki to the Ancient Theatre at around 1.5 hours, covering roughly 67 km; the Little Theatre at Palaia Epidavros is a touch closer, around 74 minutes and 53 km. Both figures come from our own query against a public routing engine rather than an operator- or Google-verified source, so treat them as planning estimates, since actual drive time depends on traffic through Corinth.

That’s still shorter than the “approximately two hours from Athens” the festival’s own venue page quotes for most of its audience. Coming via Athens first? Our Athens to Loutraki guide covers the tolls and timing. The standard route also runs close to the Corinth Canal, so a short stop is an easy add-on; see our full guide to the canal if you want to build it in. For a shorter half-day with a similar theme, see Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth.

The festival’s coach runs from Athens, not from Loutraki, so from here the realistic option is a car. Give yourself a full day: between the drive each way, the Sanctuary, the theatre and the museum, there isn’t much slack for a rushed return.

What we have not told you

A few things we’ve deliberately left out rather than guess at. We haven’t given a single precise figure for how many years the festival has run continuously, since the festival’s own materials date its founding to 1955 while a secondary source gives a different anniversary count for 2026; we’ve stuck to “running since 1955” rather than invent a round number. We haven’t described the museum’s specific exhibits, since our sourcing there wasn’t strong enough. And we haven’t written a first-hand account of a performance, because nobody on our team has sat through one.

Base yourself in Loutraki

Epidaurus rewards a full day out. That makes a comfortable base more useful than for our shorter trips. The hilltop Villa Elena, with its pool and lit tennis court, suits groups large enough to split the long drive across more than one car; the beachfront Villa Aura puts you back on the seafront at Skaloma once you’re home. Send an enquiry and we’ll help you sequence Epidaurus with the rest of the area.

Facts on the Sanctuary, the theatres and the festival’s history come from the festival’s own venue pages and the Greek Ministry of Culture’s site, checked on 1 November 2026; UNESCO figures come from UNESCO’s own World Heritage page. The acoustics research is drawn from the 2007 Journal of the Acoustical Society of America study and the 2017 TU Eindhoven field study, also reported by The Guardian. Road distances are our own calculation via public routing data, not an operator- or Google-verified figure. Prices, hours and festival dates can change with little notice; confirm before you travel. Palaia Epidavros is a separate coastal town built over the ancient city-state itself, with its own, much smaller Little Theatre around 18 km away by road. A third place, Nea Epidavros, shares the name again but has no ancient theatre at all.

How far is Epidaurus from Loutraki?

Our own road-routing calculation puts the drive from Loutraki to the Ancient Theatre at around 1.5 hours, covering roughly 67 km, slightly less to the Little Theatre at Palaia Epidavros. That compares favourably with the “approximately two hours from Athens” the festival’s own venue page quotes for its usual visitors.

What does the Epidaurus ticket include?

A single combined ticket, checked live by us on 1 November 2026 against the Ministry of Culture’s own page, covers the archaeological site, the Ancient Theatre and the on-site Archaeological Museum: full price €20, reduced €10. Free admission applies on several fixed calendar dates each year, plus the first and third Sunday of every month from 1 November to 31 March.

Can you really hear a coin drop from the back row of the theatre?

Not quite. A 2017 field study by TU Eindhoven researchers, covering more than 10,000 acoustic measurements across three ancient theatres including Epidaurus, found that loudly projected speech does carry right up to the back row, but a dropped coin, torn paper or struck match only reached about halfway up the auditorium under testing, and a whisper only as far as the front rows.

When does the Athens Epidaurus Festival run?

The festival has run most summers since 1955.
